Cardiac Research Studies

Glendale Memorial Heart Center is one of a few hospitals in California participating in some of the latest Cardiac Clinical Trials and Research Studies to help better identify, prevent and treat cardiovascular disease and contribute to breakthrough medical technology worldwide.

Our most recent cardiac research studies are the DETERMINE and WBC studies, which use non-invasive procedures such as MRI, cardiac ultrasound (echocardiogram), and EKG to assess the need and benefit for a patient to receive a cardiac defibrillator or a biventricular pacemaker.

DETERMINE Study
The DETERMINE study is landmark in preventive medical technology. The DETERMINE study is cutting edge because it uses MRI to assess the need and benefit for a cardiac defibrillator in an otherwise healthy population. The results of this study may pave the way for people with prior heart attack history to prevent future sudden cardiac death that may be associated with this population. This study would recognize an implantable defibrillator as a new "standard of care" for prevention of cardiac sudden death by using MRI as a diagnostic tool.

WBC Study
The WBC study will benefit patients with heart failure. The WBC study uses non-invasive procedures, EKG and tissue doppler imaging (echo), to determine if the patient will benefit from a pacemaker that synchronizes the left and right ventricles of the heart (cardiac resynchronization therapy.) This improves the heart's ability to pump blood efficiently and reduce the symptoms of heart failure.

Other upcoming cardiac research studies include:

PAD Study
(PERIPHERAL VASCULAR DISEASE STUDY)

PAD results in limitations in blood flow, which limits oxygen delivery to the extremities in afflicted people. The limitation in oxygen supply results in a range of symptoms ranging from exercise-limiting intermittent claudication (IC) to critical limb ischemia. This study will evaluate the ability of a new drug to control the symptoms of PAD.

Rocket AF Study
This study is for patients with atrial fibrillation that will assess a new "blood thinning" medication as a safer alternative to the drug Coumadin (Warfarin).
